More on The Gorge visual effects here: ART OF VFX
For The Gorge, I worked with the IMAGE ENGINE Assets Department and collaborated with the internal VFX Supervisor shaping a multitude of the film’s creatures, environments, and key sequences. For our work, the project revolved around three major assets—Skullspiders, Hollowmen, and the Bodyweb—which were further developed into bespoke set-pieces and keyframes to define several of the core VFX sequences.
Key Contributions:
Skullspiders: Designed for the eerie church sequence, these bone-and-vine hybrid creatures fused human and plant DNA into grotesque, spider-like forms.
Hollowmen: Human figures overtaken by plant DNA, where an imaginary "DNA slider" methodology was used to show varying levels of infection.
Bodyweb: A network of plant-human hybrids where I created key drawings and tonal studies to refine their look and ensure visual clarity.
Setpieces: Developed bespoke concepts for the Church and Silo interiors/exteriors, integrating decay and overgrown nature into human-made structures.
Art Direction: Provided serveral keyframes to establish lighting, visual targets, and maintain narrative consistency, ensuring the director’s vision was realized.
Each design hopefully played a role in enhancing The Gorge's dark, atmospheric world, blending sci-fi horror with organic realism.
