The was a fun but challenging job for Animal Logic. Michael Halford and myself (and later, assisted by Ben Walker) were tasked with creating the assets for a title sequence which started in earth’s orbit. In a sequence of shots, the camera zooms down to John Koestler (Nicholas Cage) star-gazing with his son from his backyard home in Boston.
Several of the shots start in the day, so both day and night time assets had to be created. The only element we were provided by production/Animal Logic was the live-action plate of the house from top down, as seen in the last frame. What made the sequence so tricky was the need for continuity, so assets needed to be embedded into each other, to get a sense of ‘zooming’.
After much research, Michael and I found that sports fields and airports were really helpful in keeping the viewers eye focussed, which were art directed to both look good and to provide the eye visual clues that we were moving closer and closer to the earth.
The assets were created entirely in Photoshop.
